WordPress Responsive Design in 2024 - the good and the bad!
👉 *** Download the CSS code and my plugin here: jakson.co/freebies/
It’s very possible you will have come across a topic that’s been quite high on coverage since the dawn of Full Site Editing and WordPress Block Theming, and that is the lack of responsive controls for blocks in the Gutenberg editor. Specifically things like padding, margin, sizing and spacing at different screen sizes - you know, what we know as “responsiveness”
In pretty much every critique of FSE there will invariably be a reference to this apparent shortcoming - and on paper it is a blatant oversight by the WP core dev team to have left out this now ubiquitous functionality available in every other WordPress page builder. WP core FSE is a page builder, right?
But hang on, surely there must be a reason for this? I mean, if something like responsive control is a given in a modern page builder, why is it missing from WP core?
There is a reason - and that is that WP core has wedded itself to the new-ish “Intrinsic Web Design” methodology - a concept (and the name) introduced to the world by Jen Simmons back in 2018.
It does away with the now traditional media queries approach using breakpoints to load specific CSS at specific screen sizes that creates the responsive mobile-first sites we know today and instead uses the newer CSS math functions min(), max() and clamp() to adjust sizing in a super fluid way - the elements and spacing don’t jump to different sizes when you hit a certain pixel screen width they flow and change with every change in width - it’s really is rather cool.
If you’re not up to speed on what “Intrinsic Web Design” is then I encourage you to pause this video, and check out Brian’s excellent 101 video here: ua-cam.com/video/ZXJJgxJ_h7o/v-deo.html
So it works super well but as Brian says, fluid spacing and typography can only get us 90% of the way there and in today's vid I’m gonna show you what to do about the other 10% with a system I’ve been using and developing ever since I’ve been creating native block themes.
So let's get to it - it’s “WordPress Responsive Designs in 2024 !”

    Very interesting video and what a clever use of core blocks with a little custom CSS and JS. But I agree with @gianbattistamaricosu that the navigation block is one of the weakest if not the weakest aspects of the Editor. I hope that the WP team spend more time looking at Wix and Webflow, seeing where WP needs to be at for FSE. For all but the simplest of clients a custom old school menu as a block is required.

    I love the Synced Patterns Overrides feature; however, it seems to lack an important functionality - the ability to apply Overrides to nested patterns. For example: I create a Synced Pattern consisting of a Heading and a Paragraph (with override capability), but next I want to create a Synced Pattern composed of three of the previously created patterns. The goal is to allow for text content changes while maintaining consistency in spacing between blocks, padding, etc. Currently, the original Synced Pattern loses its override capability when embedded in a new Synced Pattern. Possibility to enable override functionality for nested patterns would be a great extension of the Synced Pattern Overrides feature, significantly simplifying the creation of consistent layouts across the entire site. What do you think about it?

    Hi, I created a custom block using one of the core blocks. Added few extra lines of code generated from ChatGPT. I am no developer. However, the plugin folder is huge around 250mb. the zip file is itself around 70mb. I created the custom block locally on WP Studio and VS Code. How do I export the plugin to be installable but not be so huge in mb?

    • @wpjakson
      @wpjakson 5 днів тому

      Hey Jim, yes, it doesn’t look great on paper - but due to how the block editor adds inline CSS to the actual HTML markup (which is epic for all sorts of reasons btw) we need the !important for this solution so it can override those inline styles and we can take control of the styling - its a great use-case and one of the main reasons we have !important in CSS i.e. to be able override stuff we can’t otherwise control.

      Hey Kacper - hello again! Ooo, that sounds like you'll need a bit of JS. Something like have the JS check for when a particular section comes underneath the header and at that point get it to change the color of your header elements?

      @@wpjakson Yes, that's exactly what I need. I keep thinking that JS is beyond me and have been trying to stick to CSS, but it looks like it's time to get familiar with it. :)

    Looks nice! Have you tried Nick Diego’s experimental mega menu block? I like how you manage all of the mega content within the same template part. Makes editing and managing those much more efficient.

      Hey Derek - yes, Nick's block is amazing - can't wait for that to be released for production - should be in core!! And yeah, I was looking for the easy win with this approach - everything in the one interface, all core etc. Glad you liked it!
